One of the things that struck me most about these Chinese dancers was their height. The girls were all of similar height and they were tall. I suppose their dance company has strict casting guidelines to have this level of consistency.
I didn't have much interaction with the Chinese performers, as they did not seem particularly open to socializing with the other companies. I'm sure that the language barrier had much to do with this. Or perhaps their shyness is cultural.
Their performances had more of a modern dance edge than any other company at the festival. In some cases both the movements and the music were kind of jazzy. And the musicians sometimes took their performances toward rock music territory. In their closing night set they even covered a Louis Armstrong song.
It was ironic that the most isolated group of the tour was so strongly influenced by outside sources. That's something I didn't expect to see at a folkloric dance fest.
